Message from the Mayor

The following was my welcome to the alumni during their annual alumni dinner on June 27th.

Welcome back to Powell.I have, in the past, put on my chamber of commerce hat and told you the benefits of living in Powell Wyoming. Of course, you are a prize recruit; you lived her before, you have pride in our community, and most of you have jobs. Plus, Powell is one of those communities that haunt you wherever you go. How many of you have been in a conversation where Powell comes up and someone else in your group had an uncle or cousin that lived in Powell, worked here, or went to school here? It happens all the time. So maybe if you came back, you wouldn’t be haunted all the time. The other day, I was going to work and got behind the street sweeper. I had to wait twenty seconds for him to move out of the way. Traffic! I would hope that you don’t have to wait 20 seconds for your traffic to clear out in your town. If so, I would complain to your mayor. A few weeks ago, we had to remove a mountain lion from a tree on Bernard Street, just three blocks from here. Last week, it was a fawn on Ingalls Street that wouldn’t leave. How many times are the deer and lions removed in your communities? (For those of you from the Michigan area, you would love to have the Detroit Lions removed but that’s not why I’m here) Despite having wild animals roaming our town, we are still very modern with a citywide fiber to the home project that we just completed. Just about every home and business in Powell is now fiber optic ready, the only town in the region to have this capability. If your business uses Internet, you should think about Powell. If you don’t have a citywide fiber optic project, I would complain to your mayor.Yes, there is construction in the community that has things a little messy. Homesteader Park is getting a nine million dollar addition to its froggy pond and Plaza Dianne is getting a one million dollar facelift. But we want to make it nice for when you move back to Powell. The Plaza should be done in August and the aquatic center in March. If you don’t have a new community center and aquatic center being built in your community, complain to the mayor. While your vision of Powell in the past may have been dry and arid, have you noticed how green the town is? The entire valley is a vibrant green and farmers and ranchers have been smiling. While we can’t take credit for the moisture, we are making sure that our parks and boulevards are manicured for your appreciation. Our last big storm had three tenths of an inch and to convenience us, it comes at night when most of us our sleeping. If your community has big storms, ill-timed steady rainfall during picnics, tornados, or temperature extremes, think about Powell. Or just complain to the mayor. This town tries to build what you started and tries to preserve what you remembered. During this centennial year, we have looked at your past in this town and found out quite a bit about your class, your family, your fads, your habits, and they have most of the time, brought a smile to our face. You have probably seen the book sold in Powell, “At Home in the Powell Valley” which contains our history. There is also a calendar being sold with your history, as well. And yes, even our alumni celebration this weekend is the making of Powell’s history. So when you’re stuck in that traffic jam next week in your town, the rain is pouring, your kid’s are coughing because they aren’t exercising and the only wild animals you see are those gang members out by your garage, think about the town that you helped form. Think about that green community in that low taxed state of Wyoming. Think about coming back and living life like you remember. Plus, with all of your previous complaining, your mayor will be glad to get rid of you.

Thank you alumni and thank you for helping us become a great community during our first one hundred years.
