Hello, I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I graduated from Northwest College with an Associate of Science degree (emphasis in Outdoor Education) and from the University of Idaho with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Recreation (with honors). I have worked in Aquatics for almost 9 years in a variety of positions including lifeguard, instructor, waterfront director, and head lifeguard. Most recently I was an Aquatics Specialist I at the Paul Stock Aquatics Center in Cody. I am looking forward to working with everyone in Powell to make this an amazing aquatic center! Please feel free to stop by City Hall, call, or email cparmer@cityofpowell.com if you have any suggestions. – Carrie Parmer

Message from the Mayor

I just received an important letter in the mail that I can share with you. It was from the U.S. Department of Commerce with their official logo. If you look closely, it’s a tall ship with a lighthouse representing commerce just like in the Big Horn Basin.

The letter read; Dear Resident: (It’s like they know me personally!) In about one week from now, you will receive a 2010 Census form in the mail. When you receive your form, please fill it out and mail it in promptly.

It was actually signed by Robert M. Groves himself, the Director of the U.S. Census Bureau! Finally, a Robert Groves to add to my autograph collection!

No, I’m not joking about the Census since our early ancestors knew that we would need to count our country every ten years to see who was out there and who needed what. Of course, they use money as an incentive. The letter states that the results will be used to help each community get its fair share of government funs for highways, schools, health facilities, and other programs. The statewide level uses it to distribute funds, and we even use it on our consensus money at the county level.

Did you see their Super Bowl ad? It costs 2.5 million dollars. They have a sponsored car in NASCAR too. (“I’m trading paint with the Census car! Darn you Greg Biffle!”) They even hired Dora the Explorer because kids count too.

They’re advertising has centered around special interest groups and ethnicity. You’ve seen the ones geared toward Native Americans? That group still doesn’t trust the government. I wonder why?

Now is certainly a perfect opportunity for the scammers. There will be lowlifes that use the Census to try to get your bank account number and social security number. U.S. Census workers will have identification, a handheld device and a confidentiality notice. But these things can be easily fabricated, so it's important to know what census workers will not do:
They will not
ask for your Social Security number or financial information, e.g. bank or credit card accounts.
They will not ask you for money or say that you owe money.
They will not harass or intimidate you.
They will not contact you by email- only by phone, by mail, or in person.

That comes directly from old Bob Groves himself. Grovey as we like to call him. A great guy who works more than once every ten years.
